Let's celebrate innovation! We had the pleasure of attending the summer party of the innovation alliance between Deutsche Bahn and TU Darmstadt. On June 12, 2024, the participants met for a lively get-together and exchanged views on current projects and activities in various working groups. During the event, our team members Aylin Altun and Raphael Hackober were on site to provide insights into our current research projects.

Combined Transports with the handling of complete semi-trailers or containers are complex to organize. Two of our research projects at the Technical University of Darmstadt are investigating the potential of digitalization to make Combined Transport more attractive.

On 24 May 2024, Michael Gleser successfully defended his doctoral thesis on “Combined Rail-Road Transport in Europe” – hats off to him and high praise from the entire team.

What does the future of freight transport look like? Our students set out in search of answers: As part of our seminar's “Logistics Live!” excursion, around 30 of our students, accompanied by our research assistants Aylin Altun and Hongjun Wu, learned more about all four types of transportation.

In order to support the modal shift from road to rail freight transport, it is necessary to increase the attractiveness and competitiveness of single wagonload transport. Innovative concepts that enable the separation of freight wagons and containers in single wagonload transport offer new potential for acting more flexibly and responding better to customer needs.

Precise knowledge of utilization data is crucial for the efficient management and improvement of rail transport in Germany. The German Centre for Rail Transport Research (DZSF) of the Federal Railway Authority (EBA) has initiated the “MONI” research project to collect utilization data on rail freight transport, local rail passenger transport and long-distance rail passenger transport using an interdisciplinary approach.

Innovative solutions are needed to promote combined freight transport (CT) in Germany. At the annual meeting of the Transportation Research Board in Washington DC, USA, Hongjun Wu reported on how rail freight transport can be improved.
