From road to rail: solutions for semi-trailers in combined transport

2024/09/05

More goods need to be transported via rail – but how? Combined road/rail freight transport (CT) combines the flexibility of road freight transport with the environmental friendliness of rail – a perfect combination for achieving our climate targets. However, the shift from road to rail means an increased use of semi-trailers in CT. On the one hand, this poses technical challenges, as many semi-trailers cannot be craned and therefore cannot simply be transferred to rail, and many terminals are already reaching their capacity limits. On the other hand, it is often an organizational challenge, especially for smaller freight forwarders, to efficiently manage the circulation of semi-trailers. In our article in the latest issue of “Internationales Verkehrswesen”, Prof. Elbert and Paul Bossong look at how digital platforms and new technologies, for example, can help to address these challenges and make combined road/rail freight transport even more attractive.
