How freight transport in Germany can remain efficient: Interview for the HOLM blog

2024/09/10

Freight transportation in Germany faces the challenge of becoming more efficient and environmentally friendly on both road and rail. The solution? Combined road-rail freight transport (CT), which combines the strengths of both modes to provide a sustainable alternative to pure road freight transport. Although CT is often seen as an area of gradual change, recent years have shown that dynamic developments are possible.

In an interesting interview with the HOLM blog, Ralf Elbert and Yuerui Tang share their insights on how combined transport in Germany can be made more attractive through targeted measures and how existing barriers can be overcome. Based on the “CT Radar 2023” and interviews with experts, 23 measures to strengthen CT were identified. What is particularly striking is that 19 of these measures have a high potential to significantly increase the market share of CT, but require considerable implementation efforts – especially in the area of infrastructure as well as cooperation and coordination between the individual players. Strengthening combined transport is not an easy undertaking, but it is essential for the future of freight transport in Germany.
