Market potential for innovative cargo-handling technologies for combined road and trail transport

Semi-trailers are the most frequently used loading device in Europe for long-distance transport. But only 1% of the semi-trailers in Germany are vertical lift able and thereby compatible for combined road and trail transport. Therefore, alternative horizontal cargo-handling technologies have been developed. These cargo-handling technologies should enhance the use of combined transport by providing technical and economical solutions for non-lift able semi-trailers. The aim of the project is to identify decisive influential factors regarding the selection of transportation means and the use of combined transport. A model is developed in order to simulate the decision behavior of the actors regarding the selection of transportation means. The parameters are derived from expert interviews. The simulation model provides information whether the type of the cargo handling technology actually affects the decision on the selection of transportation means.
