23 Measures for the essential strengthening of combined transport
2024/09/03
Germany can only cope with the constantly growing volume of goods in the long term with the help of combined road/rail freight transport (CT) – and this is becoming increasingly important. With this development, it is essential to identify potential and sustainable measures that can strengthen CT in Germany. Prof. Elbert and Yuerui Tang present 23 measures in the latest issue of “Internationales Verkehrswesen”. These include, for example, the use of digital automatic coupling or data-driven planning with artificial intelligence.
As part of the “ ” research project, these 23 promising measures, which are spread across policy, infrastructure, cooperation & coordination and technology & market, were identified and examined in detail for their feasibility and potential impact on market share. It is particularly interesting to note that measures such as focusing training content in logistics on CT or suspending the CO2 tax/toll on pre- and onward carriage could already have positive effects in the short to medium term. The study clearly shows one thing: despite the large number of promising approaches, it is necessary to carefully weigh up which of the measures can be implemented in order to strengthen the competitiveness of combined transport in the long term. The discussion about the assessments and recommendations from the “CT Radar” is therefore of great importance for the further development of freight transport in Germany.
