2024

Innovative solutions are needed to promote combined freight transport (CT) in Germany. At the annual meeting of the Transportation Research Board in Washington DC, USA, Hongjun Wu reported on how rail freight transport can be improved. With the aim of making train rotations more efficient, we are working together with the MegaHub Lehrte as part of the research project “KV-Hub” .

Raphael Hackober also presented the research work on barriers to innovation in European rail freight transport in a poster session in order to gain a better understanding of the current challenges in rail freight transport.

2023

For the Winter Simulation Conference in December 2023, Felix Roeper traveled to San Antonio, Texas. He presented current research results on the topic “Simulation-based analysis of improvements in vehicle routing with time windows using a one-sided VCG mechanism for the reallocation of unfavorable time windows,” and discussed cost-saving strategies for forwarders through the strategic reallocation of unfavorable time windows.

Prof. Ralf Elbert, Raphael Hackober and Yuerui Tang traveled to Dresden for the 13th Logistics Management Conference from September 13-15, 2023, and spoke in not one but two presentations on interdisciplinary research into innovations in intermodal rail freight transport and on train load planning for intermodal rail operators in a hub-and-spoke network.

Looking at “Sustainability in Production and Logistics”, the ASIM Conference on Simulation in Production and Logistics took place this year from 13-15 September in Ilmenau. At the conference, organized by the Ilmenau University of Technology, Julia Wenzel presented research results on the topic “Evaluation of Different Use Case Configurations in a Robotic Mobile Fulfilment System.”

With an eye on digitization and innovation in intermodal freight transport, Prof. Elbert, Johannes Rentschler and Felix Roeper attended the 16th World Conference on Transport Research (WCTR) in Montréal, Canada, from July 17 to 21, 2023, and provided insights into two research projects.

Prof. Elbert and Johannes Rentschler talked about the potential of reliable dynamic “Estimated Time of Arrival” (ETA) forecasts in intermodal transport. Special attention was given to the benefits for SME forwarders and the promotion of flexibility and sustainability of intermodal transport chains.

Prof. Elbert and Felix Roeper presented research on how truck platoons in road freight transport can be planned in a decentralized way using AI developed by Deep Reinforcement Learning to reduce costs and emissions in road freight transport.

Under the theme “Coping with Shortages and Disturbances”, this year's ISSL took place in Dresden, Germany. There, Johannes Rentschler and Prof. Elbert provided insights into current research on the transport chains of the future, which must be flexible and resilient in order to respond quickly to bottlenecks and disruptions. The war in Ukraine has disrupted global logistics chains, and alternative transport routes from Asia to Europe are needed. Together with the German-Kazakh University, we are placing a special focus on the Trans-Caspian Route in our research, examining the opportunities that this new transport route offers and the challenges that must be overcome to realize its full potential.

At this year’s 6th Interdisciplinary Conference on Production, Logistics and Traffic (ICPLT) at TU Dortmund, Prof. Elbert and research associate Hongjun Wu shared insights into their research on a dynamic container routing problem on a rail-based hub-and-spoke network. This research relates to our research project “KV-Hub” on piloting new combined transport products and processes, with a focus on the rapid transshipment facility at MegaHub Lehrte.

On the topic of synchromodal transport chains, i.e. synchronized and interconnected transport networks that allow a change of transport mode in real time, Prof. Elbert and our research associate Johannes Rentschler had the opportunity to speak at the Annual Meet of the Transportation Research Board in Washington, D.C. in the USA. Together they presented their research results on the potentials of synchromodal transport, collected together with Felix Weber, in the session “Current Research in Intermodal Freight Transport”.

2022

As part of the WCTRS Virtual Meet 2022, Prof. Ralf Elbert, as Chair of the WCTRS Special Interest Group B3 “Freight Transport Operations and Intermodality”, together with his team, organized two sessions on “Climate Change – The role that freight transport can play to avoid emissions”. In collaboration with the TRB AT045 Intermodal Freight Transport Committee for the first session and with the participation of numerous international guest speakers at both sessions, promising initiatives to reduce/avoid emissions in freight transport were identified and evaluated.

In Timisoara, Romania, Ruben Tessmann, external research associate at our Chair, presented the joint research with Prof. Ralf Elbert under the title “IOIs adoption and diffusion: a review of port and cargo community system literature”. They investigate how Port and Cargo Community System (CS) adoption research has been operationalized with a Structured Literature Review approach to test whether CS adoption research has a different thematical and methodological focus than overall IS, specifically Inter-organizational Information System (IOIS) research.

As part of the Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting, Johannes Rentschler presented his research “Combined Hub Location and Service Network Design Problem – A Case Study for an Intermodal Rail Operator and Structural Analysis” on January 10, 2022 in Washington D.C., USA.

2021

As part of the Winter Simulation Conference 2021, Prof. Ralf Elbert and Michael Gleser presented a commercial case study entitled “Assessing the hinterland of maritime ports in the european northern range”. The project, which was developed in cooperation with the Port of Rotterdam, deals with North Rhine-Westphalia as the hinterland of the ports in the northern range and examines the competitive situation. Many thanks to Frank van der Laan from the Port of Rotterdam for the great cooperation.

The 25th PhD workshop of the European Logistics Association took place in Lappeenranta, Finland, from 13 to 16 October 2021. The Department of Business Management and Logistics was represented by its staff member Johannes Rentschler, who presented his research on the use of data-driven planning in intermodal transport in a lecture entitled “Data Driven Planning in Intermodal Transport”.

On 15.10.2021, our colleague Felix Roeper presented the first results of his research project “Exchange platform for time windows” at the pre-event of the German Logistics Congress 2021 of the BVL – Bundesvereinigung Logistik “News from the Think Tanks of Logistics – Science and Research”.

On 22.09.21 Prof. Dr. Ralf Elbert and M.Sc. Felix Roeper presented their first research results on the ongoing research project “Exchange platform for time windows” at the 3rd Innovations in Freight Data Workshop of the Transportation Research Board. Especially the possibility to exchange time windows on a cross-provider data platform was the focus of the presentation.

The Department of Management and Logistics was represented with a presentation at the 12th Logistics Management Conference in Dresden, Germany, September 15-16, 2021. The presentation took place in the Supply Chain Operations sessions of the conference. Prof. Dr. Ralf Elbert and Johannes Rentschler presented the current research in on the topic “Integrated Hub Location and Service Network Design Problems – Case Study for an Intermodal Operator for Strategic Network Expansion”.

The topic of combined passenger and cargo transport was presented by Jessica Schwarz and Johannes Rentschler under the title “Combined passenger and cargo transport: A hybrid simulation and optimization approach focusing on the transshipment of cargo between streetcar vehicles” on August 26, 2021 at the 8th Online International Conference on Transportation Systems Engineering and Management (CTSEM 2021). Due to the pandemic, the conference was not held in Kerala, India, but online.

On the 5th ICPLT conference Ralf Elbert and Julia Wenzel presented their research results on the topic “How human capabilites are impacting the individual strain in manual order picking”. These were part of the research project AufKomm .

Participating in the discussion were the project partners Tim Steinebach and Jurij Wakula from the Institute of Ergonomics.

2020

At Winter Simulation Conference, Ralf Elbert and Roland Lehner presented the paper “Simulation-based Analysis of a Cross-actor Pallet Exchange Platform”. This paper is about a simulation-based analysis of the impact of a digital pallet exchange platform that manages pallet debts and outstanding receivables between supply chain actors. Thereby, the focus lies on potential savings of additional trips by forwarders to supply empty pallets.

2019

Under the title “Systematic Logistics Service Engineering: Computer Simulation for Tender Management in Contract Logistics” Ralf Elbert and Tessa Sarnow presented their research results at this year's “ASIM Conference Simulation in Production and Logistics”. The conference took place from September 18th to 20th, 2019 in Chemnitz and was organized by Fraunhofer IWU.

The German Logistics Congress of the BVL took place this year from October 23 to 25 in Berlin. The Chair of Management and Logistics was represented with two lectures: In the context of the Science Pitches, Jan Philipp Müller presented the results of the AiF-funded research project on relation-based decision support in combined transport (RelKV). In addition, Jan-Karl Knigge presented his research on virtual reality in manual picking in the sequence “News from the Logistics Think Tanks”.

From 27 to 29 June 2019, the 24th PhD student workshop of the European Logistics Association took place in Edinburgh, UK. The Chair of Management and Logistics was represented by its colleague Jan-Karl Knigge, who presented his research on the use of virtual reality for manual order picking processes in a lecture entitled "Human factors in logistics: Can virtual reality be used to simulate manual order picking processes?

The 4th ICPLT (Interdisciplinary Conference on Production, Logistics and Traffic) took place from 27 to 28 March 2019 at the TU Dortmund University. Classified in the track “Policy & Human Factors” Prof. Elbert and Roland Lehner presented under the title “Influence of a Reasonable Allocation of Pallets in the Pallet Exchange System”. The conference proceedings were published by Springer Verlag under the title “Advances in Production, Logistics and Traffic”.

The second IHSI took place in San Diego, California from February 7-10, 2019. Classified in the track “Humans and Artificial Cognitive Systems” Tessa Sarnow presented under the title “Augmented Reality in Order Picking – Boon and Bane of Information (Over-) Availability”. The conference proceedings were published by Springer Verlag under the title “Intelligent Human Systems Integration 2019”.

The Chair of Management and Logistics was represented with two lectures at the 11th Logistics Management Conference from September 18 to 20, 2019 in Halle (Saale). Both lectures were held in the digitization sessions of the conference. Prof. Dr. Ralf Elbert and Anne Friedrich presented the current research in cooperation with Prof. Dr. Anne Lange from the University of Luxembourg on the topic “Make or Buy? The Case of Additive Manufacturing in Industrial Applications”. In addition, Prof. Dr. Ralf Elbert and Michael Gleser presented their paper on “Digital Forwarders – A market oriented taxonomy”. The conference proceedings were published by Springer Verlag under the title “Logistics Management. Strategies and Instruments for digitalizing and decarbonizing supply chains – Proceedings of the German Academic Association for Business Research”.

The Manufacturing Modelling, Management and Control 2019 (MIM 2019) conference took place in Berlin from August 28 to 30, 2019. In the session “Interoperability and Information Management” Prof. Dr. Elbert and Tessa Sarnow presented their research results achieved together with Jan-Karl Knigge and Rami Makhlouf on the topic “Experimental Study on User Rating of Virtual Reality Applications in Manual Order Picking”.

From May 26, 2019 to May 31, 2019, the fifteenth annual World Conference on Transport Research was held in Mumbai, India. The Chair of Management and Logistics was represented with two presentations at the conference. On the one hand, Prof. Dr. Ralf Elbert and Christian Friedrich presented their current research on “Urban consolidation and cargo bikes: a simulation study” in the session on Urban Goods Movemen. On the other hand, Prof. Dr. Ralf Elbert and Jan Philipp Müller presented in the session Intermodal Freight Transport their contribution on “Network planning and design in multimodal transportation under consideration of uncertainty”.

At this year's Winter Simulation Conference in National Harbor (USA), Ralf Elbert and Jan Philipp Müller presented how optimization algorithms and simulation can support mode selection. Current research results were presented, which should enable forwarders, shippers and logistics service providers to compare combined road/rail transport and road freight transport for given routes. A novelty of the approach is that possible delays in both modes of transport are taken into account in the evaluation. Furthermore, Michael Gleser and Amr Mahfouz presented their work on the topic “A post-Brexit Transportation Scenario Analysis for an Agri-Fresh Produce Supply Chain”.

2018

The 35th German Logistics Congress of the Bundesvereinigung Logistik e.V. took place this year from 17 to 19 October in Berlin. Under the motto “Digital meets Real”, a total of 3,539 participants addressed the current challenges facing the logistics industry in Germany and around the world. Prominent guest speakers included Peter Altmaier, Sigmar Gabriel and Dorothee Bär. Jan-Karl Knigge, who presented the AiF-funded research project “Urban Logistics Facilities” as part of the Science Pitch, was one of the representatives of the Chair of Management and Logistics.

From 11th to 13th June 2018 the 16th IFAC Symposium on Information Control Problems in Manufacturing took place in Bergamo (Italy). During this triennial conference, international scientists presented their research on industrial infrastructures and new production and information technologies. The department was represented by Jan-Karl Knigge, who held a presentation entitled “Transferability of order picking performance and training effects achieved in a virtual reality using head mounted devices” in which he presented the work of the department in this area.

The 20th International Symposium on Inventories was held in Budapest from 20 to 24 August 2018. As part of the session on Inventory Management, Anne Friedrich's current research results on Simulation-Based 'Total Cost of Ownership'-Analysis for Network Design – Investigating the Impact of Inventory-Related Costs and Christian Friedrich's presentation on Investigating the Cost-benefits of Labelling Postponement – A Simulation Case Study were presented.

From 13 to 14 June Prof. Ralf Elbert and Tessa Sarnow were attending the “9th International Scientific Symposium on Logistics – Understanding Future Logistics – Models, Applications, Insights” of the Bundesvereinigung Logistik (BVL) e. V. in Magdeburg. They delivered a presentation on “Virtual Reality in Logistics – Opportunities and Limitations of Planning & Training in Logistics with VR”.

From 20th to 22nd February 2018 the 6th International Conference on Dynamics in Logistics (LDIC 2018) took place in Bremen. Professor Elbert together with research associate Katrin Scharf presented their recent research on the topic “Analysis of the Choice Behavior for Container Transport Services in the Maritime Hinterland” during the session of “Maritime Logistics”.

From 9 to 12 December 2018, the Winter Simulation Conference (WSC) 2018 was held in Gothenburg, Sweden. The Chair of Management and Logistics was represented at the conference with two presentations. On the one hand, Professor Elbert and Christian Friedrich presented their current research on “Simulation-based Evaluation of Urban Consolidation Centers Considering Urban Access Regulations” in the session on Logistics within Cities. On the other hand, Professor Elbert and Jan-Karl Knigge presented their contribution on “How Order Placement Influences Resource Allocation and Order Processing Times Inside a Multi-User Warehouse” in the session Simulation of Transport Logistics Facilities and Systems.

2017

On 9th and 10th November 2017, the Chair of Management and Logistics was participating with two presentations on the 2nd Air Cargo Conference at the House of Mobility and Logistics (HOLM) in Frankfurt. In the category “Research & Best Practices” the topic “LogIn: Acceptance of Multi-Stage Cargo Community Systems (CCS) in Air Cargo” was presented. Furthermore, research associate Katrin Scharf presented on “The Influence of Digitalization on the Port Choice Behavior” in the session “Outside Perspectives”.

From 20th to 22nd September 2017 the 17th ASIM Symposium “Simulation in Production and Logistics” took place at the university of Kassel. On Europe’s biggest conference for simulation in production and logistics recent research issues and developments as well as interesting applications in simulation are discussed by researchers and practitioners. The Chair of Management and Logistics was represented by Prof. Elbert and his research associate Jan-Karl Knigge presenting on the topic “Analysis of Decentral Platoon Planning Possibilities in Road Freight Transportation Using an Agent-based Simulation Mode”. Additionally, Katrin Scharf held a presentation about the topic “Analysing the Influence of Hinterland Transportation Costs on Port Market Share: A Combined Discrete-Event and Agent-based Simulation Approach”.

On 6th April 2017, the fourth logistics conference organized by DVZ and Nieuwsblad Transport attracted about 150 participants. In the context of the session on digitization in logistics research associate Katrin Scharf presented her recent research findings on the topic “Data transfer in hinterland logistics chains”. Subsequently, a panel discussion with the other speakers of the session was held.

This year, the 22nd ELA Doctorate Workshop took place in Wroclaw in Poland. The Chair of Management and Logistics was represented by research associate Katrin Scharf with a contribution titled “The impact of digitalization on order placement and order process efficiency in transport chains”.

From the 25th – 26th of September, the third Interdisciplinary Conference on Production, Logistics and Traffic (ICPLT) took place in Darmstadt. The conference is located alternately at TU Darmstadt and TU Dortmund and takes place every two years. This year, Prof. Elbert was presiding the organization committee. The conference addresses an interdisciplinary audience concerned with the disciplines of production, logistics and traffic and serves as a platform for knowledge-exchange and networking. The main target of the conference is to analyse mutual dependencies and conflicts of interest between the areas of production, logistics and traffic and to find scientific and application-oriented solution approaches.

Prof. Elbert himself presented several of his research projects at the conference: Together with Katrin Scharf, he talked about the topic “The influence of digitalization on the port choice behavior”. Furthermore, he gave an insight into the research of “Simulation-based analysis of the effects of differences in demand on user behavior n multi-user warehouses” together with Jan-Karl Knigge. Finally, Anne Friedrich presented her contribution with the title “A planning approach for the implementation of Lean in-house transport systems in brownfield plants”.

This year´s conference was attended by over 80 participants from 14 countries. One of the key topics among the conference contributions were the current economic, technical, ecological and societal influences on the field of production, logistics and traffic. Furthermore, a significant amount of contributions dealt with the topic “Production, Logistics and Traffic in an Urban Context” showing the actuality and importance of this specific topic.

Besides the numerous presentations, the conference has been supported by four keynote presentations held by Prof. Alan McKinnon (Professor Kühne Logistics University), Prof. Lóránt A. Tavasszy (Professor Delft University of Technology), Dr. Christian Langhagen-Rohrbach (Ministry of Economics, Energy, Transport and Regional Development, State of Hessen) and Hasso Georg Grünjes (Siemens AG).

At the end of the first conference day, a dinner was organised giving the participants the chance for further discussions and networking.

On the last conference day, the awarding of the “Best Paper award” took place. It is intended to honour the most outstanding contribution to IPLT's scope of research in terms of interdisciplinarity, innovation of content, scientific attractiveness and practical relevance. This year, the contribution “Shipment size modelling and the impact of latent class: comparison of French and German results” by Raphael Piendl, Martin Koning, François Combes and Gernot Liedtke received the award.

In retrospect of a successful conference in Darmstadt, the organisation team is already looking forward to the fourth ICPLT which is anticipated to take place from the 27th-28th march 2019.

From 9th to 14th July 2017, the 17th World Congress organized by the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) took place in Toulouse (France). The Chair was represented by research associate Jan Philipp Müller in the “Invited Session” on the topic “Human Factors and Ergonomics in Industrial and Logistic System Design and Management”. His presentation was on the topic “Manoeuvres in manual person-to-parts order picking systems: Is there a significant influence on travel time and metabolic rates?”.

Professor Ralf Elbert and his research associate Anne Friedrich attended the conference “Logistikmanagement 2017” held in Stuttgart from the 20th till the 22nd of September. They presented the latest findings of the chair concerning the research on the topic of time slot management in road freight transport.

From 3rd to 6th December 2017 the WSC celebrated its 50th birthday in the famous desert city of Las Vegas. The Chair of Management and Logistics was represented with two presentations on this conference. Professor Elbert presented on the topic “The Impact of Item Weight on Travel Times in Picker-to-Parts Order Picking: An Agent-Based Simulation Approach“. Furthermore, Professor Elbert and research associate Katrin Scharf presented on the topic “Simulation of the Order Process in Maritime Hinterland Transportation: The Impact of Order Release Times“.

2016

At the 21th ELA Doctorate Workshop in Vienna (22.-25.06.2016) Mr. Daniel Reinhardt, research associate at the chair of Prof. Elbert, presented his research on “Increasing Capacity Utilization in Intermodal Transport Chains Considering Uncertainty”. Together with Mr. Ahmed El-Said (University of Huddersfield, UK) he received the award for the best presentation.

At the Annual conference of the International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME) in Hamburg (23.-26.08.2016) Katrin Scharf and Daniel Reinhardt, research associates at the chair of Prof. Elbert, presented their research on maritime transport chains with focus on hinterland transport. The title of Katrin Scharf’s presentation was “The impact of order changes on the order process efficiency in the maritime transport chain”. Daniel Reinhardt presentation was entitled “Increasing Capacity Utilization in Rail-Based Container Hinterland Transport by Overbooking – A Simulation Study”. Both presentations were scheduled in sessions explicitly dealing with hinterland connections of ports.

On the “25th annual IPSERA Conference – Purchasing and Supply Management. From efficiency to effectiveness in an integrated Supply Chain Management” in Dortmund on 23rd March 2016 Prof. Elbert’s chair was represented by the research associate Dominik Thiel holding a presentation on the topic “Potential-based Priorization of Purchasing Processes – a Process Model for Multiple Criteria Decision-Making”.

The Chair Management and Logistics of Prof. Ralf Elbert was represented by the research associate Dominik Thiel at the conference “19th International Symposium on Inventories” with a lecture titled “Time Slot Management Systems for Warehouse Loading Docks – A Simulation-based Analysis of the Policies of Warehouse Operators” on 23 August 2016.

Prof. Dr. Ralf Elbert and Dominik Thiel presented their paper “Impact of the Warehouse Operator’s Behavior Regarding Enforcement of Time Slots in the Cost Structure of Road Freight Transport Services” at the conference “8th International Scientific Symposium on Logistics – Logistics in the Times of the 4th Industrial Revolution – Ideas, Concepts, Scientific Basis” on 16th of June 2016.

Prof. Elbert participated in the 14th World Conference on Transport Research in Shanghai which took place from 10th July to 15th July at Tongji University of Shanghai. The latest research results of the division of management and logistics about combined traffic were shown in the presentation “Intermodal Freight Transport and the Mode Choice Decision: Perceptions of Decision-Makers to Modal Shift”. Furthermore, talks with the German-Chinese Academic Association (CDHK) of the Tongji-University were conducted in order to start and intensify cooperations.

In Arlington, Virginia, the “Winter Simulation Conference 2016 – Simulating Complex Service Systems” took place from 11th to 14th December 2016. Prof. Elbert and Mr. Reinhardt presented their contribution on the topic “Increasing Capacity Utilization of Shuttle Trains in Intermodal Transport by Investing in transhipment Technologies for Non-cranable Semi-trailers” in the context of the logistics, SCM and transportation track (session intermodal transport).

2015

From the 23rd until the 25th of September 2015 the ASIM Dedicated Conference “Simulation in Production and Logistics” took place in Dortmund, Germany. The conference provides every other year an opportunity for practitioners and academics in the field of simulation to present and discuss innovative topics. As part of the session “Assistence Systems for Simulation Use” Prof. Dr. Ralf Elbert and Torsten Franzke presented results from their research project in the field of congestion/blocking in manual order picking systems. The talk (“A Simulation-based Analysis of the Effects of Picker Blocking in Manual Order Picking Systems”) was developed during a cooperation with Prof. Dr. Christoph H. Glock and Dr. Eric H. Grosse from the chair of Production and Supply Chain Management.

On 21st July 2015 Prof. Ralf Elbert and his reasearch associates Dominik Thiel and Daniel Reinhardt presented their latest research in their presentation “Delivery Time Windows for Road Freight Carriers and Forwarders – Influence of Delivery Time Windows on the Costs of Road Transport Services” in Dortmund at the “2nd Interdisciplinary Conference on Production, Logistics and Traffic (ICPLT)”.

From the 5th until the 8th of July 2015 the International Symposium on Logistics took place in Bologna, Italy. Prof. Dr. Ralf Elbert and Torsten Franzke presented their contribution with the title “An Agent-Based Simulation Approach for Evaluating the Effects of Picker Blocking in a Rectangular Warehouse”. It was part of the session “Decision support techniques, technologies and processes”. The contribution was developed during a cooperation with Prof. Dr. Christoph H. Glock and Dr. Eric H. Grosse from the chair of Production and Supply Chain Management. Altogether more than 100 papers were presented by scientist from all over the world.

From the 16th until the 18th of September 2015 the conference Logistikmanagement 2015 took place in Braunschweig. In the “Supply Chain Management” session Prof. Ralf Elbert and Mr. Holger Pontow presented their current research on „Coordination in maritime transport chains – Performance indicators to measure impacts of improved information flows in hinterland transportation by rail“ as well as Prof. Ralf Elbert and Ms. Katrin Scharf on „Analyzing a transportation network for the construction of a seawater supply pipeline in a developing country – A simulation-based approach”. Additionally, Prof. Ralf Elbert together with Dr. Volker Schmidt from the Volkswagen Group Logistics conducted a workshop on “Innovation Management” and Prof. Ralf Elbert organized the young researchers session on “International career paths in research – opportunities and snares”.

From the 6th until the 9th of December 2015, the “2015 Winter Simulation Conference – Social and Behavioral Simulation” took place in Huntington Beach, California. In line with the session “Managing Complexity” Prof. Elbert and Mr. Franzke presented a research paper: “Agent-based Analysis of Picker Blocking in Manual Order Picking Systems: Effects of Routing Combinations on Throughput Time”. This contribution was a joint project with Prof. Glock and Mr. Grosse from the Chair of Production and Supply Chain Management.

2014

From the 12th until the 13th of November 2014, the “AnyLogic Conference 2014 – Networking with Supermodels” took place in San Francisco. Prof. Elbert and Mr. Walter presented their current research on “Increasing rail capacity utilization in port of Hamburg by early provision of information for import containers”.

On 28 April 2014 Prof. Ralf Elbert and his research associate Ulf-Thido Gerdes presented at the event “European Research Seminar (ERS). Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) European Research Seminar (ERS) on Logistics and SCM” the research topic “Governance and moderating effects of environmental uncertainty: The impact on performance in horizontal logistics cooperations”.

Between the 15th and the 18th of July 2014, the conference of the International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME) took place in Norflok, USA. In the field of management and strategies for port hinterland connections Prof. Elbert and Mr. Ponotow presented their research topic “Improved information flow in the post- expansion Panama Canal Era – A Comparison of Different Utility Functions in rail -bound hinterland Transportation”. The corresponding full-paper was selected by peer reviewer for publication in the accompanying conference proceedings.

From the 9th until the 12th of November 2014 the “INFORMS Annual Meeting – Bridging Data to Decisions” took place in San Francisco. In the context of the Special Interest Group (SIG) Freight Transportation and Logistics, Prof. Elbert and Mr. Walter presented their current research on the topic of “Impact of ETA on the capacity utilization of the actors in the MTC – A simulation- based approach”.

Between the 18th and the 22nd of August, the Department Management and Logistics chaired by Prof. Elbert has participated in Budapest at this year's International Symposium on Inventories (ISIR). According to the lectures in the areas of Inventory Management, Forecasting and Economics of Inventories the Department of Management and Logistics contributed the research topic “A Reference Process to Define Customer Order Decoupling Point in the Manufacturing Area of Small and Medium – Sized Enterprises”.

Prof. Ralf Elbert and his research associate Daniel Reinhardt were represented at the conference “International Conference on Logistics and Maritime Systems (LogMS)” with a lecture titled “Impact of Forecast Errors on Transportation Costs in Sea Freight Procurement – A Simulation-Based Approach in Rotterdam ” on 27 September 2014.

On 20 May 2014 Prof. Elbert and his two research associates Cora Bogusch and Özhan Özsucu presented on the “10th International Meeting on Logistics Research” lecturing on their research topic “Revenue Sharing as an Incentive for Increased Information Disclosure in Outsourcing Relationships: An experimental Investigation” in Marseille.

From the 7th until the 10th of December 2014, the “2014 Winter Simulation Conference – Exploring Big Data through simulation” took place in Savannah, Georgia. In line with the Group Logistics, SCM and Transportation (Port Logistics) Prof. Elbert and Mr. Walter presented their current research on “Information flow along the maritime transport chain – A simulation-based approach to determine impacts of estimated time of arrival messages on the capacity utilization”.

2013

At the Logistics Management Conference 2013, the Department of Management and Logistics was represented by two presentations. From the 11th to the 13th of September the German logistics researchers met at the University of Bremen to discuss current research topics. Cora Bogusch and Jan Tränkner presented theoretical explanations for the barriers in the implementation of multi-user warehouses under the title “How Multiuser Warehouses can be Designed to Succeed – A Research on Influences and Barriers”. The contribution of Professor Elbert and Lowis Seikowsky “Service Engineering Blueprint for Logistics Service Providers – A Framework for Product and Process Solutions” dealt with models for the solution of principal-agent management problems that can occur during the development of logistics services.

From 15th until 18th of July 2013 the triannual “World Conference on Transport Research (WCTR )” took place for the 13th time. Chosen from more than 1000 submitted research themes, Prof. Elbert and Mr. Pontow presented their research topic “Standardization and Integration of Information Flow Along the Maritime Transport Chain”. According to the presentation in Rio de Janeiro this article was selected by the peer reviewer for publication in the conference proceedings.

The winter session of the WK logistics took place on 18th and 19th January 2013 in Darmstadt. Keeping to tradition, the winter meeting provided a wide range of different presentations within the topic of logistics. At the Lichtenberghaus of the TU Darmstadt the Department of Management and Logistics served for the right atmosphere.

The Scientific Commission (dt. Wissenschaftliche Kommission – WK) Logistics is promoting logistics within business research and theory. More than 100 members of the WK logistics represent with their specific research and theory themes the typical cross-sectional character of logistics. This applies to all micro and macro logistic subsystems. The implementation of the WK goals is achieved by scientific meetings on a regular basis (winter and summer meeting), in which the members of the commission present and discuss their research results and ideas for teaching and further training.

2012

In 2012, Mrs. Cora Bogusch and Mr. Holger Pontow were awarded with the Thesis Award for their outstanding achievements. Mr. Pontow completed his diploma thesis at the Department of Management and Logistics, TU Darmstadt , entitled „Geschäftsprozessmodellierung in der maritimen Transportkette. Eine importseitige Betrachtung ausgewählter Akteure im schienengebundenen Hinterlandverkehr“. Mrs. Bogusch‘s thesis was entitled “Preisflexibilisierung in langfristigen Verträgen als Absicherung gegen die Preisrisiken aus Sicht eines Luftfrachtspediteurs” at the Department of Logistics Services and Transport of the TU Berlin chaired by Prof. Dr. Ralf Elbert.
